Circulation Policy
Students may check out up to five books. Most materials can be checked out by students for three weeks at a time and can be renewed only once for another three weeks. However, if another student has put a hold on an item a student has checked out, then a renewal is not possible. Reference materials may be checked out by students for overnight use only. All books are due back no later than two weeks before the last day of school to allow time for inventory. While books can be used in the media center during the last week, no books can leave the media center.
The only materials that students may not check out of the media center are materials from the teacher professional library.
Teachers may check out items for as long as they need to use them; however, if a student or another teacher is seeking the item, the teacher will be asked to return the item ASAP so that others can use it.

Overdue Fines
Students will not be charged overdue fines. An overdue slip will be issued to the student. Students will only be charged if a book is not returned or is damaged. No other materials can be checked out until the overdue materials are returned. Overdue fines are capped at the total cost of the item. The obligation will follow the student each year until the book is paid for or returned.

Lost Book Policy
If a student checks out materials from the media center and loses them, he or she will be responsible for paying the full replacement cost of the item(s).
However, in the event that the student does not have the ability to pay at that time, it will become an obligation that must be fulfilled prior to graduation from high school or moving to another school district. Students will not be able to check out additional items from the library until the lost book is paid for or found.
If a teacher checks out materials from the media center and loses them, or proceeds to loan the item to a student that loses it, he or she will be responsible for paying the full replacement cost of the item.
We understand that books may occasionally become lost due to unique circumstances that are not the fault of the person that checked out the materials (fire, theft, etc). These situations will be handled on a "case-by-case" basis when brought to the attention of the media specialist.

Selection Policy
Since a public school system must meet the needs of a variety of students, the school's Board of Education seeks to provide ample materials of varied formats with a range of difficulty levels to support and enrich the curriculum. Materials should appeal to the school's diverse population and should represent different ethnic, religious, political, and cultural viewpoints. Materials should be free of gender or ethnic stereotyping as well. "Library media specialists work cooperatively with administrators and teachers to provide resources which represent diverse points of view, stimulate growth in thinking skills, and promote the overall educational program. Library media collections are developed to meet both curricular and personal needs" (BCPS).

Access to Media Center Resources When the Media Center is Closed
There are times when the media center will be closed to students for testing or other events. However, that does not mean that students cannot continue to access the media center's resources. The media center will continue to be open before and after school for use by students.
Students will also have after hours online access to media center resources, including the Media Specialist, through the library website and the online public access catalog (Alexandria). Using the online catalog, students can search the media center's collection to see circulation status and place holds on materials. Using the website, students are able to search the online databases from the library or access Maryland's AskUsNow online reference service 24 hours a day .
